Simple two dimensional faulting models assume:

an infinite block of homogenous linear elastic material

discrete planar cracks (dislocations) of specified lengths

a spatially uniform far field stress state

the cracks are in static equilibrium.

To model displacements, fault models usually assume either

1). a constant displacement on the fault surface or

2). a constant stress drop
