Simple two dimensional faulting models assume:

  • an infinite block of homogenous linear elastic material

  • discrete planar cracks (dislocations) of specified lengths

  • a spatially uniform far field stress state

  • the cracks are in static equilibrium.

To model displacements, fault models usually assume either

1). a constant displacement on the fault surface or

    2). a constant stress drop
