Using the SGI from the Macs and PCs
I have equipped both the Macintosh computers and the Pcs with
the ability to simulate most SGI functions remotely. This means that
you can use the Macintoshes in the lab (and around campus if they have
the proper software) and the PCs in the lab (and again around campus if
the proper software is installed) to use the workstation as if you were
sitting at the machine itself. This allows more than one person to
use programs such as ERDAS and ERMapper at one time from different locations.
-
In order to use the SGI from a Macintosh:
-
Pull down the Microsoft Office Application menu. This menu is the
second from the right icon at the top of the screen and looks like a pencil
and a pad of paper.
-
Drag down to eXodusPPC 6.1.2 or something resembling this.
-
Once the program is open, under the connections menu, select Alai.
This should give you a login prompt in several seconds which allows you
to log on to alai with your username and password.
-
Do research.
-
Once you are done, make sure to log off of alai, by selecting Log Out
from Alai’s File menu. When you have done this, you may select
quit from the Macintosh file menu, but not before.
-
* You may get error messages that say that the available memory is
getting low. In order to fix this problem, log out of alai as described
above and quite eXodus. Click under the hard drive in the Applications
folder until you see a folder that says eXodusPPC or something like that.
Click this folder open and click once on the icon which says eXodusPPC
or the like. Under the File menu, select Get Info.... When
this window is open, you will see at the bottom a Suggested Memory Size
box. Select the number that is in that box and raise it substantially.
If the problem persists, raise that number until the problem stops.
-
In order to use the SGI from a PC:
-
In the hard drive, desktop, or Start menu, find the eXceed program
and launch the program.
-
Once you start the program, you should be faced with a login prompt.
Simply enter your username and password for Alai.
-
Do research.
-
Once you are done, make sure to log off of alai, by selecting Log Out
from Alai’s File menu. When you have done this, you may quit eXceed
by pressing the big red stop sign on the eXceed toolbar.
