This web page describes the Information Technology plan for Proposition 301 funding which is focused on developing basic and applied research with high potential and key to the new economy in Arizona: http://researchnet.asu.edu/prop301/isit.html Much of the funding from this group is going to efforts in embedded systems, telecommunications, bioinformatics, multimedia. I am thinking that another area that could be enhanced would be the information technology side of the environmental data, models, and projects here at ASU; in particular, this might be a focus on geospatial/temporal applications and analyses (~GIS). As I understand it, what we could do is develop a proposal that would seek funding on the order of $240k, $160k, and $80k for three years respectively. The ramp down in funding is a measure of the strong desire that these seed funds be used to provide a strong return on investment with leveraging of 301 to external funds of at least 1:2. I propose that we might develop a proposal to establish a center for Geo -spatial -temporal applications and analyses of the environment at ASU (need a nicer name with an easy to remember acronym). The time frame for this is anywhere between the next few weeks (important window for first year funding) to a few years. If you find this interesting, please let me know your ideas and thoughts in general, as well as in particular about: Research directions Technology transfer Return on investment Economic development New proposals that might be written with some critical pilot work done through such a center Curriculum development Other colleagues who might be interested One idea that we had, especially if we choose the short turn around, would be to start with and revamp this proposal we submitted to NSF-ITR a year or so ago: http://kokkik.la.asu.edu/phx2100/2100.v5.doc Do not confuse it with the now-much more developed GP2100 project: http://www.gp2100.org/ Note also that we could possibly put in a couple of proposals (greater competition) if we felt that we could not put all the things in which we are interested into a single center. thanks, ramon -- Ramon Arrowsmith ramon.arrowsmith@asu.edu Associate Professor Office: (480) 965-3541 Department of Geological Sciences Mobile: (480) 236-9226 Arizona State University Fax: (480) 965-8102 Tempe, AZ, 85287-1404 USA http://www.public.asu.edu/~arrows
